What is Spot UV?
Spot UV is a popular coating technique where high-gloss UV coating is applied to a product, by using ultraviolet (UV) light to cure the printed material’s varnish. This spot UV printing method gives the targeted “spots” a shiny, vibrant aesthetic, and adds a protective coating to the printed product.
What is Matte Lamination?
Matte lamination has a softer and more natural look that doesn’t reflect as much light as gloss lamination, which in turn makes it easier to read the packaging. Colors are not as vivid or sharply contrasting on matte laminated packaging so although they don’t stand out as much as with gloss, if you want a more subtle effect, this could be the perfect option.
Matte lamination also has a soft texture that’s protective, but rather velvety in how it feels.
What is Gloss Lamination?
Gloss lamination offers a much shinier look that increases how vibrant colors look. It’s often used for marketing pieces because it adds a touch of sophistication and professionalism to the piece.
It’s important to note that how the finished product will look depends on what you want the packaging to do as a result of light hitting it – matte lamination absorbs light and gloss lamination reflects it.
Why Is It Called a UV Coating?
The UV coating itself is applied in a liquid form. Then, as the name implies, the packaging is exposed to UV (ultraviolet) light, which then causes it to instantly dry and bond to the material it’s coating. This coating can be used over the entire area – a process known as “flooding” or it can be applied to certain areas, which is known as spot UV coating.
What is Embossing
When starting out with the embossing process, a metal plate, known as a die, is created. It has the raised graphic on it that you want to emboss onto the final product.
This plate is pressed into the product underneath, raising the profile of the product design (such as the box) to stand out. This process is then repeated again and again. Because embossing dies are made of metal, they’re incredibly durable and can be used for small scale and large scale projects alike.
It’s worth noting that embossing a logo onto a product is a different process than raised ink printing (also known as thermography). This is made possible by using a special type of powder that binds to the paper when it is heated, rather than actually raising the paper itself and thereby changing its shape.
Embossing often has a higher setup cost, however the quality is indisputable, as it adds a touch of elegance and exquisite style to a finished packaging design.
